The project offered here is a cooperation between the Research and Documentation Centre (WODC) of the Ministry of Justice, located in the centre of The Hague, the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR, a research institute of the Dutch National Science Foundation NWO) which is located at the Campus of the Free University (VU) in Amsterdam, Radboud University Nijmegen, and several societal partners, such as the Probation Service.

The PhD-project ‘Neuropsychological factors and responsivity to cognitive skills training’ seeks to investigate the value of neurobiological and neuropsychological assessment for the prediction of success in a cognitive skills training programme for detainees. One of the aims is to gain insight in the extent to which neuropsychological factors may contribute as indicators to a more focused and effective treatment to improve cognitive skills. ‘Cognitive vaardigheden training’ CoVa is a training for detainees, parolees, and probationers with cognitive skills deficits. It is widely used within the Dutch prison and probation services. CoVa is the Dutch version of ‘Enhanced Thinking Skills’ (ETS), which is used in the prison system in the United Kingdom.

The societal context of the research project is that the Ministry of Justice seeks to improve the behavioral interventions offered within the judicial system. The PhD project has to contribute to explanatory models of the relation between cognitive deficits, responsivity to cognitive skills training, and antisocial behavior. The project includes neuropsychological and behavioral assessment techniques, requires travelling for assessments of substantial numbers of detainees in penitentiaries or probation centres, and includes quantitative statistical analyses.
