he role of salience in the control of eye movements is not well understood. The aim of the PhD project is to develop a neurobiological plausible model for the role of salience in eye movement control.

The Department of Cognitive Psychology of the Faculty of Psychology and Education of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is supervised by prof. dr. Jan Theeuwes. Our main research focus is on the control of visual attention and eye movements

During the search for information people make numerous eye movements. The role of salience in the control of eye movements is not well understood. The aim of the present project is to develop a neurobiological plausible model for the role of salience in eye movement control. It is primarily aimed to investigate how the influence of salience varies in time. Experiments will be executed in which eye movements will be registered. Knowledge of and experience with computational modelling, programming, and data analysis are recommended.

Tasks
The PhD student will be expected to perform independent research, and to publish papers on that research. This will lead to a dissertation, to be finished within four years. A small contribution to the eductational program of the department will also be expected.

Requirements
The candidate has (or will have in the near future) a Master’s degree in cognitive psychology, physics, informatics, biology, or some comparable area. The candidate has a strong interest in experimental research in the area of visual perception and attention; expertise in methods of research; experience with empirical research and computer programming; good ability to write and read English. 

Further particulars 
Appointment will initially be for 12 months. The starting date is flexible, but must be before August 2010. After a successful evaluation the appointment will be prolonged for another 36 months. The employment will have to result in a written dissertation by the end of the fourth year. The PhD-student will be a member of the Department Cognitive Psychology of the Faculty Psychology and Education.
