A PhD (or post-doc) position is available to study how the visual system groups together the various fragments of the visual scene that belong to a single perceptual objects in the Vision & Cognition group (head Pieter Roelfsema) at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience in Amsterdam.
Psychology of perception - how does the visual brain create objects?
Visual perception starts with a local analysis of the visual scene that subdivides the image into fragments undergoing separate processing. The visual brain system has to reconstruct objects by grouping fragments that belong together and by segregating them from the background. The standard view is that grouping is achieved by a parallel, pre-attentive process. However, in some cases perceptual grouping requires a time-consuming serial process. The project will focus on serial perceptual grouping in natural images with psychophysical techniques and recording of EEG.
The successful applicant will use psychophysical techniques and record EEG in human subjects. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in cognitive neuroscience, preferably with some experience in neurophysiological techniques, and strong programming skills.
Appointment:
The position involves a temporary appointment for 3 (postdoc)
or 4 years (PhD student).
