PhD position to study the neural correlates of visual perception, attention, and conscious awareness at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience.
PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience:
Neurophysiology of visual cognition – how does activity in the visual cortex contribute to active vision?
A PhD position is available to study the neural correlates of visual perception, attention, and conscious awareness in the Vision & Cognition group (head Pieter Roelfsema) at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience in Amsterdam.
Early areas of the visual cortex like V1, V2 and V4 represent the
outside visual world. Recent studies demonstrated that these areas also
contribute to attention and even to awareness (see Roelfsema 2006 Annu
Rev Neurosci, Lamme & Roelfsema 2000, TiNS). The present project
aims to test the causal involvement of early visual areas in attention
and awareness using microstimulation in the visual cortex. Can we
interfere with shifts of attention and suppress consciousness by
electrically stimulating small groups of neurons in the visual
cortex?
The successful applicant will use single and multiple neuron recording techniques. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in cognitive neuroscience, preferably with some experience in neurophysiological techniques, and strong programming skills.
Appointment:
The position involves a temporary appointment for 4 years.
To apply, please send application letter, CV and two letters of recommendation to:
